ומלכא דוד סיב על ביומין ומכסן ליה בלבושין ולא שחין ליה:
lyh shkhyn wla blbwshyn lyh wmksn bywmyn el syb dwd wmlka
Now King David was old and advanced in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he couldn’t keep warm.
2
ואמרו ליה עבדוהי יבעון לרבוני מלכא עולמתא בתולתא ותשמיש קדם מלכא ותהי ליה קריבא ותשכוב לותך ותשחן לרבוני מלכא:
mlka lrbwny wthshkhn lwthk wthshkwb qryba lyh wthhy mlka qdm wthshmysh bthwltha ewlmtha mlka lrbwny ybewn ebdwhy lyh wamrw
Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young virgin be sought for my lord the king. Let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm.”

ובעו עולמתא שפירתא בכל תחום ארעא דישראל ואשכחו ית אבישג דמן שונם ואיתיאו יתה למלכא:
lmlka ythh waythyaw shwnm dmn abyshg yth washkkhw dyshral area thkhwm bkl shpyrtha ewlmtha wbew
So they sought for a beautiful young lady throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

ועולמתא שפירתא עד לחדא והות למלכא קריבא ומשמשא ליה ומלכא לא ידעה:
ydeh la wmlka lyh wmshmsha qryba lmlka whwth lkhda ed shpyrtha wewlmtha
The young lady was very beautiful; and she cherished the king, and served him; but the king didn’t know her intimately.

ואדוניה בר חגית מתרברב למימר אנא אמלוך ועבד ליה רתיכין ופרשין וחמשין גברא רדיפין קדמוהי:
qdmwhy rdypyn gbra wkhmshyn wprshyn rthykyn lyh webd amlwk ana lmymr mthrbrb khgyth br wadwnyh
Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” Then he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

ולא אכלימיה אבוהי מיומוהי למימר מא דין כדין את עביד ואף הוא שפיר בריוא לחדא ויתיה ילידת בתר אבשלום:
abshlwm bthr ylydth wythyh lkhda brywa shpyr hwa wap ebyd ath kdyn dyn ma lmymr mywmwhy abwhy aklymyh wla
His father had not displeased him at any time in saying, “Why have you done so?” and he was also a very handsome man; and he was born after Absalom.

והוו פתגמוהי בעצה עם יואב בר צרויה ועם אביתר כהנא וסעדין בתר אדוניה:
adwnyh bthr wsedyn khna abythr wem tsrwyh br ywab em betsh pthgmwhy whww
He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him.

וצדוק כהנא ובניהו בר יהוידע ונתן נביא ושמעי ורעי וגבריא די לדוד לא הוו בעצת אדוניהו:
adwnyhw betsth hww la ldwd dy wgbrya wrey wshmey nbya wnthn yhwyde br wbnyhw khna wtsdwq
But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

ונכיס אדוניהו עאן ותורין ופטימין עם אבן סכותא דין בסטר עין קצרא וזמין ית כל אחוהי בני מלכא ולכל גברי יהודה עבדי מלכא:
mlka ebdy yhwdh gbry wlkl mlka bny akhwhy kl yth wzmyn qtsra eyn bsTr dyn skwtha abn em wpTymyn wthwryn ean adwnyhw wnkys
Adonijah killed sheep, cattle, and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants;

וית נתן נביא ובניהו וית גבריא וית שלמה אחוהי לא זמין:
zmyn la akhwhy shlmh wyth gbrya wyth wbnyhw nbya nthn wyth
but he didn’t call Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother.

ואמר נתן לבת שבע אמיה דשלמה למימר הלא שמעת ארי מלך אדוניהו בר חגית ורבוננא דוד לא ידע:
yde la dwd wrbwnna khgyth br adwnyhw mlk ary shmeth hla lmymr dshlmh amyh shbe lbth nthn wamr
Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Haven’t you heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord doesn’t know it?

וכען אתא אמלכינך כען מלכא ושיזבי ית נפשיך וית נפש בריך שלמה:
shlmh bryk npsh wyth npshyk yth wshyzby mlka ken amlkynk atha wken
Now therefore come, please let me give you counsel, that you may save your own life and your son Solomon’s life.

אזילי ותעלין לות מלכא דוד ותימרין ליה הלא את רבוני מלכא קימתא לאמתך למימר ארי שלמה בריך ימלוך בתרי והוא יתיב על כורסי מלכותי ומה דין מלך אדוניהו:
adwnyhw mlk dyn wmh mlkwthy kwrsy el ythyb whwa bthry ymlwk bryk shlmh ary lmymr lamthk qymtha mlka rbwny ath hla lyh wthymryn dwd mlka lwth wthelyn azyly
Go in to King David, and tell him, ‘Didn’t you, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then does Adonijah reign?’

והא עד די את ממללא תמן קדם מלכא ואנא איעול בתרך ואקים ית פתגמיכי:
pthgmyky yth waqym bthrk ayewl wana mlka qdm thmn mmlla ath dy ed wha
Behold, while you are still talking there with the king, I will also come in after you and confirm your words.”

ועלת בת שבע לקדם מלכא לאידרון בית משכבא ומלכא סיב לחדא ואבישג דמן שונם משמשא קדם מלכא:
mlka qdm mshmsha shwnm dmn wabyshg lkhda syb wmlka mshkba byth laydrwn mlka lqdm shbe bth welth
Bathsheba went in to the king in his room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.

וכרעת בת שבע וסגידת למלכא ואמר מלכא מה ליך:
lyk mh mlka wamr lmlka wsgydth shbe bth wkreth
Bathsheba bowed and showed respect to the king. The king said, “What would you like?”
17
ואמרת ליה רבוני את קימתא במימרא דיי אלהך לאמתך ארי שלמה בריך ימלוך בתרי והוא יתיב על כורסי מלכותי:
mlkwthy kwrsy el ythyb whwa bthry ymlwk bryk shlmh ary lamthk alhk dyy bmymra qymtha ath rbwny lyh wamrth
She said to him, “My lord, you swore by Yahweh your God to your servant, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’

וכען הא אדניה מלך ואת רבוני מלכא לא ידעתא:
ydetha la mlka rbwny wath mlk adnyh ha wken
Now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and you, my lord the king, don’t know it.
19
ונכיס תורין ופטימין ועאן לסגי וזמין לכל בני מלכא ולאביתר כהנא וליואב רב חילא ולשלמה עבדך לא זמין:
zmyn la ebdk wlshlmh khyla rb wlywab khna wlabythr mlka bny lkl wzmyn lsgy wean wpTymyn thwryn wnkys
He has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the army; but he hasn’t called Solomon your servant.
20
וכען רבוני מלכא עיני כל ישראל סבירן עלך לחואה להון מן יתיב על כורסי מלכותא דרבוני מלכא בתרוהי:
bthrwhy mlka drbwny mlkwtha kwrsy el ythyb mn lhwn lkhwah elk sbyrn yshral kl eyny mlka rbwny wken
You, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21
ויהי כד ישכוב רבוני מלכא עם אבהתוהי ואהי אנא וברי שלמה מתרכין:
mthrkyn shlmh wbry ana wahy abhthwhy em mlka rbwny yshkwb kd wyhy
Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered criminals.”

והא עוד דהיא ממללא עם מלכא ונתן נביא אתא:
atha nbya wnthn mlka em mmlla dhya ewd wha
Behold, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.
23
וחויאו למלכא למימר הא נתן נביא ואתא קדם מלכא וסגיד למלכא על אפוהי על ארעא:
area el apwhy el lmlka wsgyd mlka qdm watha nbya nthn ha lmymr lmlka wkhwyaw
They told the king, saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet!” When he had come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24
ואמר נתן רבוני מלכא את אמרת אדניה ימלוך בתרי והוא יתיב על כורסי מלכותי:
mlkwthy kwrsy el ythyb whwa bthry ymlwk adnyh amrth ath mlka rbwny nthn wamr
Nathan said, “My lord, King, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’?
25
ארי נחת יומא דין ונכיס תורין ופטימין ועאן לסגי וזמין לכל בני מלכא ולרבני חילא ולאביתר כהנא והא אינון אכלין ושתן קדמוהי ואמרו יצלח מלכא אדניהו:
adnyhw mlka ytslkh wamrw qdmwhy wshthn aklyn aynwn wha khna wlabythr khyla wlrbny mlka bny lkl wzmyn lsgy wean wpTymyn thwryn wnkys dyn ywma nkhth ary
For he has gone down today, and has slain cattle, fatlings, and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
26
ולי אנא עבדך ולצדוק כהנא ולבניהו בר יהוידע ולשלמה עבדך לא זמין:
zmyn la ebdk wlshlmh yhwyde br wlbnyhw khna wltsdwq ebdk ana wly
But he hasn’t called me, even me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon.
27
אם מן רבוני מלכא הוה פתגמא הדין ולא הודעת ית עבדך מן יתיב על כורסי מלכותא דרבוני מלכא בתרוהי:
bthrwhy mlka drbwny mlkwtha kwrsy el ythyb mn ebdk yth hwdeth wla hdyn pthgma hwh mlka rbwny mn am
Was this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven’t shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
28
ואתיב מלכא דוד ואמר קרו לי לבת שבע ועלת לקדם מלכא וקמת לקדם מלכא:
mlka lqdm wqmth mlka lqdm welth shbe lbth ly qrw wamr dwd mlka wathyb
Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba in to me.” She came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.
29
וקים מלכא ואמר קים הוא יי דפרק ית נפשי מכל עקא:
eqa mkl npshy yth dprq yy hwa qym wamr mlka wqym
The king vowed and said, “As Yahweh lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,
30
ארי כמא דקימית לך במימרא דיי אלהא דישראל למימר ארי שלמה בריך ימלוך בתרי והוא יתיב על כורסי מלכותי תחותי ארי כן אעביד יומא הדין:
hdyn ywma aebyd kn ary thkhwthy mlkwthy kwrsy el ythyb whwa bthry ymlwk bryk shlmh ary lmymr dyshral alha dyy bmymra lk dqymyth kma ary
most certainly as I swore to you by Yahweh, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place;’ I will most certainly do this today.”
31
וכרעת בת שבע על אפהא על ארעא וסגידת למלכא ואמרת יתקים רבוני מלכא דוד לעלם:
lelm dwd mlka rbwny ythqym wamrth lmlka wsgydth area el apha el shbe bth wkreth
Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth and showed respect to the king, and said, “Let my lord King David live forever!”
32
ואמר מלכא דוד קרו לי לצדוק כהנא ולנתן נביא ולבניהו בר יהוידע ואתו לקדם מלכא:
mlka lqdm wathw yhwyde br wlbnyhw nbya wlnthn khna ltsdwq ly qrw dwd mlka wamr
King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” They came before the king.
33
ואמר מלכא להון דברו עמכון ית עבדי רבוניכון ותרכבון ית שלמה ברי על כודנתא די לי ותחתון יתיה לשילוחא:
lshylwkha ythyh wthkhthwn ly dy kwdntha el bry shlmh yth wthrkbwn rbwnykwn ebdy yth emkwn dbrw lhwn mlka wamr
The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.
34
וימשח יתיה תמן צדוק כהנא ונתן נביא למהוי מלכא על ישראל ותתקעון בשופרא ותימרון יצלח מלכא שלמה:
shlmh mlka ytslkh wthymrwn bshwpra wththqewn yshral el mlka lmhwy nbya wnthn khna tsdwq thmn ythyh wymshkh
Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel. Blow the trumpet, and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
35
ותסקון בתרוהי וייתי ויתיב על כורסי מלכותי והוא ימלוך תחותי ויתיה פקדית למהוי מלכא על ישראל ועל יהודה:
yhwdh wel yshral el mlka lmhwy pqdyth wythyh thkhwthy ymlwk whwa mlkwthy kwrsy el wythyb wyythy bthrwhy wthsqwn
Then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne; for he shall be king in my place. I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah.”
36
ואתיב בניהו בר יהוידע ית מלכא ואמר אמן כן תהי רעוא מן קדם יי אלהא דרבוני מלכא:
mlka drbwny alha yy qdm mn rewa thhy kn amn wamr mlka yth yhwyde br bnyhw wathyb
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, “Amen. May Yahweh, the God of my lord the king, say so.
37
כמא דהוה מימרא דיי בסעדיה דרבוני מלכא כן יהי בסעדיה דשלמה וירבי ית כורסיה מכורסי מלכותא דרבוני מלכא דוד:
dwd mlka drbwny mlkwtha mkwrsy kwrsyh yth wyrby dshlmh bsedyh yhy kn mlka drbwny bsedyh dyy mymra dhwh kma
As Yahweh has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”
38
ונחת צדוק כהנא ונתן נביא ובניהו בר יהוידע וקשתיא וקלעיא וארכיבו ית שלמה על כודנתא דמלכא דוד ואובילו יתיה לשילוחא:
lshylwkha ythyh wawbylw dwd dmlka kwdntha el shlmh yth warkybw wqleya wqshthya yhwyde br wbnyhw nbya wnthn khna tsdwq wnkhth
So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39
ונסיב צדוק כהנא ית קרנא דמשחא מן משכנא ומשח ית שלמה ותקעו בשופרא ואמרו כל עמא יצלח מלכא שלמה:
shlmh mlka ytslkh ema kl wamrw bshwpra wthqew shlmh yth wmshkh mshkna mn dmshkha qrna yth khna tsdwq wnsyb
Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent, and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet; and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”

וסליקו כל עמא בתרוהי ועמא משבחין בחנגיא וחדן חדוא רבא וזעת ארעא לקלהון:
lqlhwn area wzeth rba khdwa wkhdn bkhngya mshbkhyn wema bthrwhy ema kl wslyqw
All the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth shook with their sound.
41
ושמע אדניה וכל זמיניא די עמיה ואינון ספיקו למיכל ושמע יואב ית קל שופרא ואמר מא דין קל קרתא אשתגישת:
ashthgyshth qrtha ql dyn ma wamr shwpra ql yth ywab wshme lmykl spyqw waynwn emyh dy zmynya wkl adnyh wshme
Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they had finished eating. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “Why is this noise of the city being in an uproar?”
42
עד דהוא מליל והא יהונתן בר אביתר כהנא אתא ואמר אדניה עול ארי גבר דחיל חטאין את וטב תבשר:
thbshr wTb ath khTayn dkhyl gbr ary ewl adnyh wamr atha khna abythr br yhwnthn wha mlyl dhwa ed
While he yet spoke, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said, “Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news.”
43
ואתיב יונתן ואמר לאדניהו בקושטא רבוננא מלכא דוד אמליך ית שלמה:
shlmh yth amlyk dwd mlka rbwnna bqwshTa ladnyhw wamr ywnthn wathyb
Jonathan answered Adonijah, “Most certainly our lord King David has made Solomon king.

ושלח עמיה מלכא ית צדוק כהנא וית נתן נביא ובניהו בר יהוידע וקשתיא וקלעיא וארכיבו יתיה על כודנתא דמלכא:
dmlka kwdntha el ythyh warkybw wqleya wqshthya yhwyde br wbnyhw nbya nthn wyth khna tsdwq yth mlka emyh wshlkh
The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride on the king’s mule.
45
ומשחו יתיה צדוק כהנא ונתן נביא למהוי מלכא בשילוחא וסליקו מתמן כד חדן ואשתגישת קרתא הוא קלא דשמעתון:
dshmethwn qla hwa qrtha washthgyshth khdn kd mthmn wslyqw bshylwkha mlka lmhwy nbya wnthn khna tsdwq ythyh wmshkhw
Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon. They have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that you have heard.
46
ואף יתיב שלמה על כורסי מלכותא:
mlkwtha kwrsy el shlmh ythyb wap
Also, Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom.
47
ואף עלו עבדי מלכא לברכא ית רבוננא מלכא דוד למימר יוטיב יי ית שום שלמה משמך וירבי ית כורסוהי מכורסי מלכותך וסגיד מלכא על שיוויא:
shywwya el mlka wsgyd mlkwthk mkwrsy kwrswhy yth wyrby mshmk shlmh shwm yth yy ywTyb lmymr dwd mlka rbwnna yth lbrka mlka ebdy elw wap
Moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne;’ and the king bowed himself on the bed.
48
ואף כדין אמר מלכא בריך יי אלהא דישראל דיהב יומא דין בר יתיב על כורסי מלכותי ועיני חזאן:
khzan weyny mlkwthy kwrsy el ythyb br dyn ywma dyhb dyshral alha yy bryk mlka amr kdyn wap
Also thus said the king, ‘Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne today, my eyes even seeing it.’”

ותוהו וקמו כל זמיניא די לאדניהו ואזלו גבר לארחיה:
larkhyh gbr wazlw ladnyhw dy zmynya kl wqmw wthwhw
All the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and each man went his way.
50
ואדניהו דחיל מן קדם שלמה וקם ואזל ואתקיף בקרנת מדבחא:
mdbkha bqrnth wathqyp wazl wqm shlmh qdm mn dkhyl wadnyhw
Adonijah was afraid because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and hung onto the horns of the altar.

ואתחוא לשלמה למימר הא אדניהו דחיל מן קדם מלכא שלמה והא אחד בקרנת מדבחא למימר יקים לי כיומא דין מלכא שלמה דלא יקטיל ית עבדיה בחרבא:
bkhrba ebdyh yth yqTyl dla shlmh mlka dyn kywma ly yqym lmymr mdbkha bqrnth akhd wha shlmh mlka qdm mn dkhyl adnyhw ha lmymr lshlmh wathkhwa
Solomon was told, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon; for, behold, he is hanging onto the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not kill his servant with the sword.’”

ואמר שלמה אם יהי לגבר דחיל חטאין לא יפול משער רישיה לארעא ואם בישתא תשתכח ביה ויתקטיל:
wythqTyl byh thshthkkh byshtha wam larea ryshyh msher ypwl la khTayn dkhyl lgbr yhy am shlmh wamr
Solomon said, “If he shows himself a worthy man, not a hair of his shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.”

ושלח מלכא שלמה ואחתוהי מעלוי מדבחא ואתא וסגיד למלכא שלמה ואמר ליה שלמה אזיל לביתך:
lbythk azyl shlmh lyh wamr shlmh lmlka wsgyd watha mdbkha melwy wakhthwhy shlmh mlka wshlkh
So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed down to King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
